Dr. Anthony Saville

Dr. Anthony Saville has devoted his life to bringing professionalism to the field of education. In his impressive career he has served as teacher, coach, junior high school principal, senior high school principal, college professor, and university administrator.

Born in 1929 in Montreal, Canada, Dr. Saville has been a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada for more than thirty-six years. In 1967, Dr. Saville came to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to become the university’s first Dean of the College of Education. He served in that capacity for eleven years, greatly impacting the growth and development of teacher education programs in southern Nevada. While exercising his leadership at the university, Dr. Saville also affected education within the entire state. He worked with various legislative committees as well as the UNLV Board of Regents regarding capital outlay, teacher education, organization, as well as administration and funding related to higher education. Concerned about the well-being of public servants, Dr. Saville conducted over 200 stress management, conflict management and time management seminars for teachers, school administrators and others in the community. In addition to his work within our state, Dr. Saville served as a consultant to public schools and higher education systems across the nation. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Southwest Educational Research Laboratory, now known as WESTED, from 1968 to 1997.  Dr. Saville has written innumerable articles for scholarly journals and contributed to the body of information found in academic encyclopedias and books.

Among other distinguished honors, Dr. Anthony Saville received the Board of Regents Distinguished Nevadan Award at the May 2001 Commencement, The UNLV Foundation’s Award for Outstanding Graduate Faculty in 1996, the Board of Regents Outstanding Faculty Member Award for 1995-1996, the UNLV Alumni Award for Distinguished Faculty in 1995, the Spanos Award for Distinguished Teaching at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 1990, and the Lily Fong Award for Distinguished Teaching at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1988.

Dr. Saville continues to convey a passion for education and a dedication to others who have pursued the field. He remains available to mentor, advise, and value those individuals who serve the student community. His idealism inspires; his philosophy is grounded in experiences accrued over a half of a century. We are proud that our beautiful school is named after this gifted man.
